Templates
Single Copy Template
The Single Copy Template feature helps to save disk space by allowing you to reference design information in a single template, instead of having to store that information with each database that uses that template. For example, the design information for a Mail Memo form used to be stored in every user's mail database. Now, the information resides in the Template itself, in a single location, and each user's database simply references that single template.
iNotes Web Access
iNotes users can read Notes-encrypted mail
Now iNotes Web Access (IWA) users have the ability to read Notes encrypted mail messages from within their IWA browser interface.
iNotes users can access LDAP directory
iNotes Web Access users have the ability to access an LDAP directory when doing name lookups in Memo and Form addressing.
Linux server support
Beginning with Notes/Domino 6.0.1, Linux is a supported server for iNotes Web Access.
Client
Roaming User
Users who access Notes from more than one Notes client can access their customized settings and personal information automatically from any Notes client in the domain. Data for these users, known as roaming users, replicates between the user's machine and a roaming user server, where these files are stored. When a roaming user logs on from a different Notes client, it automatically retrieves the user's ID file, Personal Address Book, bookmarks, and journal from the roaming user server. Any changes the user makes in these files replicate to the roaming user server. This enables the roaming user to have a consistent experience from any Notes client.
Macintosh OS 10.2 supported
Beginning with Notes/Domino 6.0.1, the Macintosh OS 10.2 is a supported platform for the Notes client.
Administration
New outline for the Domino Directory (pubnames.ntf)
The Domino Directory outline view has been modified to more closely match the outline view of the Administrator client, using the same icons for consistency. Following is an example of the new Domino Directory outline view:
Smart Upgrade supports multiple-language installs
When upgrading the Notes client, Smart Upgrade is able to recognize whether more than one language has been installed, and upgrade all of them.
Automatic Diagnostic Collection tool
The Automatic Diagnostic Collection tool is a way for Administrators to automatically collect crash diagnostic data on Notes clients and Domino servers, and send that information to a centralized mail-in database of their choosing. This will eliminate the issue of users not reporting crashes or not capturing the proper data on a client or server crash.
Designer
WebSphere Studio Application Developer can be launched from the bookmark bar
A button has been provided in the Designer bookmark bar that launches the WebSphere Studio Application Developer.
Template version information is available
For templates modified for Notes/Domino 6.0, template version information is now tracked in a single, shared field. Users can access template version information by choosing the Database -> Properties -> Design tab. The version string will show in the field as in the following example: "Title: Mail (R6) Class: StdR6Mail Build: V60_08152002"
Installation
Notes client can be installed on OS X-only Macintosh
The Notes client can now be installed on a Macintosh that has only OS X installed. Previously, Macintosh users were required to have OS 9, or OS X with the Classic OS 9 environment installed in order to install Notes 6.
Licensing
IBM LAP tool
The IBM License Acceptance Process (LAP) tool has been implemented for Windows clients in 6.0.1. The LAP tool presents users with a Licensing Agreement prior to installation, and allows them to accept or decline the agreement. Licensing Agreement acceptance is required prior to product installation.
Platforms
Solaris 9 support
Beginning with Notes/Domino 6.0.1, Solaris 9 is a supported platform for Domino.
Web Server
$CacheValid field re-introduced in Domino 6.0.1, for backward-compatibility only
Domino 6 introduced significant performance improvements, as a result of better caching, in many of the subsystems responsible for building web page results. In addition, there are several new features that provide users with the ability to customize web content, including better internationalization support, and new User Preferences.
Due to these enhancements, testing of Domino 6 revealed that server-side caching provided little, if any, performance improvement in typical usage scenarios, as the increased customization of content reduced its cachablity. As a consequence, server-side caching of web pages was removed from Domino 6. This included removal of the $CacheValid field, which was used to validate the page in the cache for a specified time period (seconds), regardless of what Domino determined the cache strategy to be.
Beginning with Domino 6.0.1, the $CacheValid field has been re-enabled for backward-compatibility only, and will not support new features in Domino 6. As a result, the use of either new User Preferences, or improved internationalization support, will impact the effectiveness of $CacheValid. More specifically, if these new features are enabled (default), and a response contains either any localizable field (time, date, currency, etc.) or any server resource strings from which more than one language can be chosen, then the response will not be cached, even if the form contains the $CacheValid field.
You can disable these new features by setting "Store Web user preferences in cookies:=Disabled" and "Default regional locale:=Server locale" in the Web User Preferences section of the Domino Web Engine tab in the server record or website document. With these settings, $CacheValid will have the same effectiveness as it did in R5 for all responses; without these settings, some responses with $CacheValid may not be cached, depending upon if they contain localizable fields or resource strings.
