IBM Lotus® Domino™ Express is the name for two new versions of market-leading Lotus collaboration software, specifically designed for small to medium-sized businesses. Domino Express offerings address the unique requirements of smaller enterprises that need cost-effective, built-just-for-you messaging and collaboration tools. Built with the same enterprise-grade Lotus Domino and Notes 6 software that powers mission-critical applications for corporations around the globe, Domino Express is a complete messaging and collaboration solution for small and medium-sized businesses (1000 employees or fewer), who need proven power in a simplified and optimized form.
Like all certified IBM Software Express offerings, Domino Express has been optimized for use by smaller enterprises, with simplified licensing and reduced administration requirements. Small and midmarket enterprises don't need less security, reliability and power than multinational corporations; on the contrary, they may need these qualities even more because information technology staffs are smaller. Thus, Express doesn't mean stripped-down versions of enterprise products; rather, it's a way to package the rock-solid performance of IBM enterprise software in a way that smaller organizations can exploit.
There are two versions of Domino Express:
- Domino Collaboration Express is a complete messaging and collaborative application solution, priced per user for smaller enterprises that need simple licensing options. It includes the full range of Domino e-mail, group scheduling, discussion forums and team workspaces, plus all of the custom application power of Domino. Collaboration Express supports the full range of client access types, from simple Web Mail and browser applications accessing Domino applications, through standards-based POP3 and IMAP e-mail, to rich, dynamic HTML-based messaging, all the way up to IBM Lotus Notes integrated collaboration software or Microsoft Outlook. And users can have multiple access types to the same mail and applications; for example Notes e-mail at the office and Domino Web Access from airport Internet kiosks.
- Domino Utility Server Express is an application-only solution (no individual user mailbox/calendar files) that is priced per server CPU, for smaller enterprises that want unlimited access via a web browser or separately licensed Notes client. With Utility Server Express, applications can support an unlimited population of authenticated users, making it a perfect choice for high-function Web sites, intranet/extranet self-service applications, and Internet communities. Customers can take advantage of hundreds of existing third party Domino applications such as sales force automation, customer relationship management or call center tracking, or custom applications developed in-house or by one of the thousands of IBM business partners worldwide.
Domino Express delivers all of the advantages of IBM Lotus Domino 6:
- Helps increase your system’s availability with advanced reliability and security features
- Saves time by letting you update your client environment centrally with low-touch deployment
- Simplifies administration and saves time by letting you centrally manage user configurations for individuals, groups or your entire company
- Reduces costs and eases administration by supporting multiple organizations and languages on one Domino server
- Helps maximize uptime with enhancements that enable sophisticated data collection and faster server restarts
- Helps keep your users productive and connected with its formula engine, full-text searching, network compression and replication
Domino Express is World-class messaging and collaboration — built to fit your business needs
Domino Collaboration Express
For smaller organizations that require secure, reliable and powerful collaboration tools, including e-mail, group scheduling and document-based custom applications via dedicated clients or Web browsers, Domino Collaboration Express is a complete and proven solution, unlike competitors such as Microsoft Exchange and Web-based solutions that are difficult to administer, more susceptible to unplanned outages and viruses, and difficult to restore when failure takes place.
Domino Collaboration Express is the same rock-solid software that powers messaging and collaborative applications in global enterprises including IBM. Limited to 1,000 licenses or fewer for any organization (as defined by a distinct Passport advantage account), Collaboration Express features a simplified, lower-cost licensing model with streamlined installation and administration options.
Pricing for Collaboration Express is user-based. Licensed users may exploit any or all of the access methods that make Domino so flexible and powerful:
- IBM Lotus Notes -- A full integrated collaborative environment (ICE) client that delivers online and disconnected support for a wide range of applications, including e-mail
- IBM Lotus Domino Web Access -- A rich dynamic HTML (DHTML) e-mail and calendar client for browsers, including offline support for disconnected use; current support is for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5+, and in a pending release this will also support Mozilla on a variety of platforms
- IBM Lotus Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook -- A connector that permits users to access Domino e-mail and scheduling from their Outlook client (when licensed separately from Microsoft)
- POP/IMAP Mail -- These Internet-standard messaging protocols are also supported by Domino, allowing simple e-mail use from within any compatible client, including Outlook Express, Eudora and Netscape Messenger
- Web Mail -- Access to Domino e-mail and group scheduling via any level 5+ browser, Web Mail delivers basic access to a high percentage of full Domino functionality, primarily targeted for occasional or low-volume users, or alternative access for traveling users
- Browser application access -- With full HTTP support, Domino applications are easily accessible via the Web (limited to licensed Collaboration Express users)
The per-user pricing makes it simple to acquire Collaboration express -- just multiply the number of users by the price and you are licensed for everything you need, including whatever server software is required. This is in contrast to standard Passport pricing, which varies per client access type, and requires an additional license for each server CPU. It is more similar to Complete Enterprise Option (CEO) pricing, which is also priced per user but has a minimum purchase volume of 500 licenses (Collaboration Express has no minimum), and requires all employees to be licensed in this manner (Collaboration Express can be licensed for only the users who need it).
Collaboration Express is designed for first-time users of Domino. No upgrade or renewal rights apply from other Lotus licenses. The low price point ($119 for new licenses and $89 for Tradeup licenses, $US at PA level BL) makes Collaboration Express an extremely attractive value for smaller enterprises. Since even smaller enterprises typically already have eligible competitive products in place -- Tradeup eligibility is defined as the retirement, on a 1:1 basis, of any commercial competitive e-mail product license (and on Linux, even freeware applies), along with the associated server software -- most customers would purchase the Tradeup variant. Customers may choose to migrate their messaging systems in-house; alternatively, IBM business partners are available worldwide to assist customers migrating from competitive systems -- visit www.lotus.com/tradeup for more information.
In compliance with the certification process for IBM Express offerings, modifications to the installation process have been made to make it easier for first-time Domino users. Combined with the intuitive, industry-standard interfaces of the client access types, Collaboration Express is the most segment-friendly Domino ever.
Consistent with the needs of smaller enterprises, license restrictions are in place that remove Domino elements and attributes appropriate only to larger enterprises. Thus, the following attributes are not included in the Collaboration Express license:
- Partitioning or clustering -- these enterprise requirements don't apply to implementations of fewer than 1,000 users
- WebSphere Application Server (WAS) entitlement that's part of standard Domino -- WAS Express is available separately for this segment
- IBM Lotus Domino Designer -- may be purchased separately, but typically IBM business partners would supply custom applications
- zSeries (including zSeries Linux) platform use -- all other Domino platforms (Windows, Linux [Intel], OS/400, AIX, Solaris) are entitled
In addition, certain administration functions are restricted by license:
- Extended Access Control Lists
- Cascading directories
- Directory catalogs
- Directory assistance
- Central directory (userless Name and Address Book)
Domino Utility Server Express
For smaller organizations that require a secure, reliable and powerful collaborative application platform, Domino Utility Server Express is a complete and proven solution, unlike competitive offerings like Microsoft Windows/Exchange/SQL Server/Commerce Server, Macromedia Cold Fusion or MySQL/PHP freeware applications, which may require multiple interdependent parts and/or lack the integrated Domino features such as rapid design and deployment features, workflow and granular security control.
Domino Utility Server Express is the same rock-solid software that powers collaborative applications in global enterprises including IBM. Limited to organizations with 1,000 or fewer employees, Utility Server Express features a lower-cost unlimited licensing model with streamlined installation and administration options.
Pricing for Utility Server Express is CPU-based. There are no client access license (CAL) requirements for Utility Server Express; as many users as can be supported by the server hardware may connect to the server without additional license requirements. Users may be internal or external to the company, authenticated or unauthenticated, and use either a Web browser or separately acquired IBM Lotus Notes client software. In contrast to Collaboration Express, Utility Server Express is not limited to individually licensed users, while offering licensed Notes users an opportunity to participate as well using their preferred client interface.
Because Utility Server Express is targeted to support custom applications, no e-mail or group calendar support is included, defined as individual user primary mailboxes (e.g., yourname@yourcompany.com). All of the messaging, calendaring and workflow capabilities of Domino are available as long as the primary mailbox restriction is honored. Therefore, high-value applications such as Web site feedback mailboxes, mailing list management applications, Web-based scheduling, or workflow and approval processes are valid under the Utility Server Express license.
Priced at $2,500 per CPU ($US at PA level BL), there is a minimum purchase of two CPUs per server with a maximum of four CPUs per server. This creates an attractive value for customers who are implementing high-function Web sites, intranet/extranet self-service applications, and Internet communities. Customers can take advantage of hundreds of existing third party Domino applications such as sales force automation, customer relationship management or call center tracking, or custom applications developed in-house or by one of the thousands of IBM business partners worldwide. Like all Domino offerings, Utility Server can support multiple applications without the need to purchase new licenses for each. Utility Server Express is designed for first-time users of Domino. No upgrade or renewal rights apply from other Lotus licenses.
